This year’s conference theme was “Neighborhoods Reaching for a Better Tomorrow”. Conference attendees were provided educational and mobile workshops, networking opportunities, motivational speakers, a Neighborhood Awards Program ceremony recognizing those volunteers who have invested their time and energy toward improving the quality of life in their neighborhoods, and a Youth Café specifically designed to engage youth in their community. Neighborhood residents from across Virginia came together for this one-and-a-half day event to help their neighborhoods reach a better tomorrow by sharing their knowledge, experience, and vision on how to make Virginia’s neighborhoods the neighborhoods of choice.

While each neighborhood has its own unique issues and challenges, VSNC offers an opportunity for participants to learn best practices that they in turn can use to help resolve the issues impacting their neighborhood’s quality of life for the conference is attended by diverse grassroots neighborhood leaders, youth, non-profit, government staff, and others working in the field of neighborhood success. By attending the conference, participants were provided:

  • Opportunities to network with others and learn best practices for addressing neighborhood issues of the times.
  • Opportunities to become energized and encouraged with tools and information to help better serve the community.
  • A place to showcase positive strides made in their communities/neighborhoods (talent, skills, plans, etc.).
  • Youth topics and workshops designed to enhance leadership skills and build character.
  • A Neighborhood Awards Program ceremony recognizing the commitment, time, and energy of those who tirelessly volunteer to make their neighborhoods the places they are proud to call home. These awards have been presented since 2000 as a collective “thank you” to those nominated neighborhoods and individuals, and are the only statewide awards given to neighborhood organizations and individuals for their neighborhood self-help initiatives.

We thank you for joining us in Lynchburg, Virginia, on September 18-19, 2014, as we explored our rich neighborhood history, and shared the talents, skills and cutting-edge innovations currently underway that are empowering our neighborhoods to overcome their challenges and achieve their successes of “Neighborhoods Reaching for a Better Tomorrow”!
